"The 3rd Degree" began as a series of stage shows designed to showcase comedic talent from university students. Each 3rd Degree show consisted of the best sketches and cast from comedy and faculty revues from all across Australia. The shows toured the "Sydney Big Laugh"and "Melbourne International Comedy Festival" throughout 2004 and 2005 to sellout crowds and rave reviews.

It comes as no surprise that the success of these stage shows soon gained the attention of Jigsaw Entertainment and Network Ten who commissioned a writing workshop to see if the characters and sketches of the 3rd Degree cast could be brought to a television audience. After eight weeks of writing and countless thai lunch specials "The Ronnie Johns Half Hour" was proposed, piloted and commisioned.
